Extracts from the 9th General Conference
Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, 1989
The ninth AARS General Conference was held on 24 and 27 November 1989 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The first day's session was presided over by Dr. Soekotjo of Indonesia in the absence of the current year's conference Chairman Mr. Mohd. Noordin Hassan, Secretary General of Science, Technology and the Environment' However, the second day's session was chaired by Mr. Hassan.
The General conference was attended by : Bangladesh, China, India, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Australia, the Netherlands, Iran., Canada, New Zealand, Sweden, UN ESCAP and GEOCART from Hong Kong. Iran was admitted as a new member of AARS and Canada, New Zealand and Sweden became associate members.
The General Conference discussed on the publication of a book on "Application of Remote Sensing in Asia/Oceania" to celebrate the tenth anniversary of the Association. The General Conference also discussed on the ERIM Symposium to be held in Bangkok in April 1998. Discussions were also held on the IGARRS Congress in Tokyo. It was agreed that AARS may be one of the co-sponsors of the congress.
It was revealed that the printing costs of the ACRS proceedings could not be covered from the income from the registration of foreign participants. The cost was supported partially by contributions from the Japan Association of Remote Sensing (JARS) and income from membership fees. It was agreed that henceforth income from Technical Information discussions and income from commercial exhibition will be collected and used for the purpose.
