The Fourteenth Asian Conference on Remote Sensing
Tehran, Islamic Republic of Iran, 12-17 October, 1993.

Professor Shunji Murai addressing the opening session of the 14th ACRS at Tehran, Islamic Republic of Iran.

The 14th ACRS was held in Tehran, Islamic Republic of Iran from 12 to 17 October 1993. The opening address was delivered by Special Envoy of Iranian President H.E. Hashemi Rafsanjani and H.E. Mr. Mohammad Gharazi, Minister of Post, Telephone & Telegraph. The message from H.E. the President is included in the Box below.

The opening session was addressed among others by Mr. Farshid Jahedi, President and CEO, Iranian Remote Sensing Centre and Professor Shunji Murai, General Secretary, Asian Association on Remote Sensing.

IN THE NAME OF ALLAH, THE COMPASSIONATE,
THE MERCIFUL
This scientific conference can play an important role in improving the quantity and quality of regional development activities. At the present time, data accessibility and processing are major contributors to positive development of nations, for this has become an indispensable element in regional cooperation among developing countries of Asia and the Pacific.
Remote Sensing is a means at the disposal of mankind, which gives the possibility to better assess and exploit natural resources and the environment, and enhance its preparedness to face natural calamities, thus decreasing human and property losses. Acquisition of knowledge about our environment justifies significant financial investment. Remote Sensing of environment can be effective only when it is realistically designed to address operational projects, through judicious processing of acquired data. This is an issue that scientists participating in this Conference should be fully cognizant.
Regional cooperation are the ideal forum for transfer of technology and know-how to countries which have little experience in remote sensing. Needless to say, such exchanges will result in significant savings for all members of ACRS.
This regional cooperation among the members of ACRS is based on their eagerness to provide a better quality of life and more profound understanding of environment through the efficacious application of this novel technology.
I wish you all success.

Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani
PRESIDENT OF THE ISLAMIC REPUBLIC OF IRAN

Mr. Farshid Jahedi, President & CEO, Iranian Remote Sensing Center also addressing the opening session.

In his address, Mr. Jahedi emphasized, "Space borne sensors will be the only reliable source of data on the environment and natural resources in most developing countries. The availability of such data can help these countries to have a better understanding of how to preserve their environment, as well as, ensure a more efficient management of their natural resources. Undoubtedly, such information will assist decision-makers to evaluate on going or planned future projects".

Professor Murai welcomed the distinguished particiapnts and guests and expressed hope that the 14th ACRS will benefit IRSC and all remote sensing user community. In total there were 474 participants. There were 62 participants from abroad and 412 Iranian participants from various user agencies and departments. The Box on the right shows the distribution of participants.

Besides the technical sessions and poster sessions, a panel discussion on " How to Promote Remote Sensing" co-ordinated by Professor Shunji Murai was organized during the ACRS. The panel concluded the following:

  • End user oriented applications should be promoted by establishing multi-discilinary groups;

  • International organizations should support a good start of national remote sensing project. However, each national remote sensing agency should drive their engine by themselves and also promote regional/international cooperation.
  • Operational data utilization based quick response as well as with an integration with GIS should be developed.

  • Satellite data and software should be provided at free of charge or very cheap rate for encouraging developing countries;

  • ACRS to support UN to establish regional centre for Space Science and Technology Education in order to regionalize remote sensing activity in Asian region

A two day trip was arrange for foreign participants to the great archeological treasures and monument in the famous city of Isfahan. A visit was also arranged to the Iranian Ground receiving station and other remote sensing facilities.
