The Ninth Asian Conference on Remote Sensing was successfully held at the Ambassador Hotel, Bangkok, Thailand during November 23-29, 1988. It was the second time that Thailand had been honored to be the host of such a Conference since the First ACRS in 1980. The Conference was attended by 478 participants from 30 countries. This had been a new record of number of ACRS participants.
It was also the most memorable occasion for the Organizing Committee and the participants that Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn graciously presided over the Opening Ceremony and delivered a keynote address which was about her project on land use/land cover mapping in Narathiwat Province using Landsat Thematic Mapper Data. In addition, Her Royal Highness had so much interest in remote sensing that she attended the Conference for four days, except the last day.
There were 92 technical presentations and 21 poster presentations made during the conference. In addition, there were 30 exhibit booths by commercial companies demonstrating the latest technology in remote sensing. Five oral technical presentations by young scientists were selected as the outstanding ones (three from Thailand and one each from Japan and China). These presentations were:
