The Second Asian Conference on Remote Sensing
Beijing, China 29 0ct. - 4 Nov. 1981

Introduction

The Second Asian Conference on Remote Sensing was held at the Friendship Hotel, Beijing, China from 29 Oct. To 4 Nov. 1981. It was organized by the Asian Association on Remote Sensing (AARS) and sponsored by National Remote Sensing Center of China and Japan Association of Remote Sensing (JARS).

Objectives

The objectives of the Second ACRS were:

  1. To discuss the Asian problems in development of remote sensing
  2. To exchange academic and technical information
  3. To promote operational applications

Opening Session

The Second ACRS was formally opened by Mr. Zhaodong Wan, Vice Minister, State Science and Technology Commission of China and Prof. Wang Daheng, President, Changchung Branch of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Prof. Yang Shiren, Deputy Director, Institute of Remote Sensing Application, Chinese Academy of Sciences. The opening ceremony was attended by a large gathering of over 400 people, including scientists, senior administrators, planners from China and the Asian and Pacific Countries. The session was addressed by Prof. Shunji Murai General Secretary of AARS.

Delegates

A total number of 157 delegates from 12 Asian and Pacific countries and regions participated in the Second ACRS in Beijing. The countries present were Australia, Bangladesh, China, Cyprus, India, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Philippines, Sri Lanka, Thailand and U.S.A.

Scientific Deliberations

A total number of 110 papers were presented in the Conference. Among them 10 were the national reports of some Asian countries and 3 were special topics and 45 papers were presented orally and 52 were poster papers. The national reports described the overall activities in each country in the field of remote sensing technology and its applications. The oral presentations and the poster papers dealt with research and development works in remote sensing.

ASIAN ASSOCIATION ON REMOTE SENSING (AARS)

Two General Meetings of the AARS were held during the Second ACRS. THE STATUTES OF THE ASIAN ASSOCIA-TION ON REMOTE SENSING produced in the General Meeting were a great event for AARS.

Other Activities

The Commercial Exhibition of remote sensing technologies and equipment from different countries was held during the conference.

The technical visits were also conducted. The organizations visited were the Institute of Remote Sensing Applications, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing University and Remote Sensing Center of Ministry of Geology.

The important event was the visit to the Ming Tombs and the Great Wall. Mr. Fang Yi, the Vice-Premier of the State Council, the People's Republic of China hosted a welcome reception for all participants of ACRS in the Great Hall of the People.
